I Still Play

for piano solo (2017)

Jeremy Denk on “I Still Play”

I Still Play is a short five and a half minute piece for piano composed to celebrate Bob Hurwitz, president of Nonesuch Records, upon his retirement after three decades of leading that company. It is Bob who “still plays” the piano every day when he’s not traveling. Cast as a set of short variations on a generating harmonic progression, the piece acknowledges Hurwitz’s longtime love of the Bach Goldberg Variations.

It was first presented on a special tribute concert honoring Hurwitz at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on April 1, 2017, performed by one of the great Bach pianists, Jeremy Denk, whose recording of the Goldberg Variations was one of the triumphs of the Hurwitz era at Nonesuch.
