Composed in 2013 for the American virtuoso Tim McAllister, John Adams’ new concerto for alto saxophone and orchestra is a major addition to the instrument’s repertoire. Inspired by classic studio recordings from the fifties and sixties by Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and Cannonball Adderley, the new concerto pushed the limits of the instruments technical and expressive powers. Tim McAllister joins the Saint Louis Symphony under David Robertson for this recording, which is coupled with Adams’ “City Noir.”
Due for release in April 2014 on Nonesuch Records (with Saxophone Concerto). See Nonesuch home page for more details.
